Sissy Squat Continued

I am being dogmatic. There are many better ways to progress someone to being able to squat than using a sissy squat which is only an enabler as mentioned in the earlier post. This was presented as an exercise for middle distance and distance runners, a group for which it is highly inappropriate. See Tracy Fobers blog http://ironmaven.blogspot.com today on the whole article. She critiques the article better than I can. Thought I would toss in a picture from the good old days. This is a picture of the Santa Barbara High School Girls Mile relay that was Sixth in the 1976 California State meet. Each of these girls could squat between 200 and 225 and not one of them was over 125 pounds in body weight. They never did sissy squats. Ignorance is bliss.

yes and it is dissapointing after reading your earlier blog titled 'A Few Random Thoughts About the Blog' and being open minded.

Here is what does not make sense:
-Simply doing dorsiflexion mobility drills, lunges, and stepups with an athlete who cannot properly full range squat, and then expecting to be able to not squat until they can successfull do so?

-How about integrating all of the above with sissy squats? Over a period of time just make the object the athlete is standing on lower and lower until they can successfully perform the movement with feet flat on the ground!

Work with the athlete from their success not prevent them from what they cannot do!

Regarding your distance runner girls, did any of them have a history of injury?

How is getting them to sissy squat a success? With my distance runners if they cannot keep their heels on the ground they do not squat. Yes they end up doing different exercises than their teammates, butisn't that what coaching is all about. IMO, having them learn and be able to do it correctly will lead to better gains when they can perform the squats correctly.

If they can't full range squat then they don't need to be doing external weight. Teach them to correctly squat using body weight and allow them to master that before trying to load a bar with plates!

I think we need to look at the big picture. Obvisely this athlete needs alot more than focusing on the SISSY squat. How about something more important. Like maybe FLEXIBILTY.I'm sure if you look furtherup the chain this athlete needs alot of work. I see it day in and day out in my clinic that correct warm-up and stretching would benefit this athletes more so than the squat.
