The World Cup

I was happy to see Italy win. Sad to see Zidane end his career on such a down note. I do not like to see a championship at any level end on Penalty kicks. I think there should be sudden death but that does not fit with the demands of television. Also it would be good to have a bit more recovery time between the semi finals and the finals. The cumulative effects of fatigue were evident in both teams. The length of the season and the length of the tournament take its toll.

It was extremely sad to see Zidane end his career that way.

Walking past the very Gold Cup he could have won, on his way out, must have been very humilating. He appeared to be in a daze.

I stand corrected ...he was awarded the best player in the tournament...even sadder!

So Italy won The Cup. Destiny decided that the lesser team would take the prize.

Lovely, beautiful, elegant Zidane had a very human and sadly profane moment. And this part of an article on CNN is very illuminating.

Domenech went further than that, suggesting that Materazzi, not Italian playmaker Andrea Pirlo, deserved to be named man of the match. And he might have a point. Materazzi has a well-earned reputation as nasty player in Italy's tough Serie A, and his role in the ugly drama was nowhere near as surprising as Zidane's.
He was suspended for two months in 2004 after punching an opponent and conceded earlier in the tournament, "I can't tell you how many times my kids have been told at school that I'm a monster."
"You make mistakes in life," Materazzi added. "But then you have to purify yourself, without seeking revenge. Everyone has their destiny."
If so, he took a good man down with him.
