The Past

You can learn from the past or you can live in the past. Too many sports and too many coaches are living in the past. There are also too many coaches and therapist who have no idea of the past. It is imperative to learn from the past. There have been many great people with innovative ideas and concepts in the past sixty to seventy years in this country alone. This ideas and concepts are still viable today and in fact the basis of much of what we do, but they are largely unknown or ignored. The book, pictured on the left, was written by a famous swim coach, Bob Kiputh of Yale University in the early 1950’s. He was a pioneer in the use of Dryland training. He made extensive use of medicine ball training and body weight exercise in the 1940’s. This is just one example of many. I think it was Toynbee who said “Those that ignore history are condemned to repeat it.” I prefer to learn from the past. Learn from others mistakes and successes.

Here is an interesting bio of this coach. http://www.buffalosportshallfame.com/Class_of_1997/Bob_Kiphuth/bob_kiphuth.html

Amazing that he is the only sportsman other then Arthur Ashe to win the Presidential Medal of Freedom. I always think of Councilman at IU as the greatest American swim coach. Kiphuth is certainly his equal.
